Launch Capsizes at Cronulla

Thirteen Men Rescued

Published: Thursday, March 27, 1947

Thirteen ex-servicemen students of the C.S.I.R., Fisheries School at Cronulla had a terrifying experience one day last week when they were capsized from an overturned cutter into the shark-infested waters near Shelley Beach, Cronulla. Members of the Cronulla Surf Life-Saving Club, in a surfboat, held the launch from being dashed to pieces on the rocks until a trawler took the capsised craft in tow. A shark was seen cruising near the men, and fishermen in launches, realising their plight, raced to the rescue. The men were in the water nearly twenty minutes before being picked up. The students, from the recently-established Cronulla School , set out in the cutter to pick up fishing nets off Shelley Beach. After rounding Cronulla Point the cutter was hit by a strong wind, tossed about and overturned. The men were thrown into the water 250 yards from shore. While swimming, one student saw a shark cruising close by. The others became aware of the shark's presence and remained close to one another. After their rescue, the students showed no ill-effects from their experience.
