Kingsgrove Methodists

Flower Show and Fete

Published: Thursday, March 27, 1947

The Methodist Church, Kingsgrove, was crowded with flower-lovers last Saturday afternoon and evening, when a flower and vegetable show and fete was held. The function was arranged by the flower-show committee of the church, in conjunction -with the Horticultural Council of N.S.W. and the Dahlia Society of N.S.W.

Mrs. D, K. Tritton (president) welcomed the visitors, including Mr. Clive Evatt, M.L.A. for Hurstville (Minister for Housing), also several aldermen from Hurstville and Bexley Councils. Mr. Evatt, in declaring the show open, said he was proud that the progressive district of Kingsgrove was in his electorate. He expressed the hope that council would not industrialise Kingsgrove because of the many lovely homes and gardens that abounded there. He congratulated the exhibitors on their display of blooms. He also referred to The Departure of the Minister of the Church, Rev. W. H. Willey, who would be relinquishing the charge in April to take up work in the Ryde Circuit.

During the afternoon Mrs. Kilby rendered the solo "Poor Man's Garden." The display of blooms consisted of dahlias, roses, carnations, zinnias, gerberas, miscellaneous flowers,) and vegetables. A cooking competition was also held, being responsible j for a large number of entries. Miss Coiling (of St. George County Council Home Service) judged the cooking. | Several stalls were arranged in a marquee in the church grounds, and included general goods (Ladies' Church Aid); sweets (Methodist Girls' Comradeship); ice cream and drinks' (Order of Knights). A vote of thanks to Mr. Evatt, the judges, exhibitors, artists, and to the flower show committee for the help given, was moved by Rev. W. H. Willey. Approximately £40 was realised as a. result of the function.
