Published: Thursday, March 27, 1947 At last week's meeting of Hurstville Council the health inspector, Mr. H. Doig, referred to many complaints which had been received from residents, particularly in Railway Parade Hurstville, regarding the nuisance caused by smoke, soot, etc., from the brickyards in Forest Road, Hurstville. Investigation showed that the chimney stack attached to 'the patent kiln had been demolished in part some years ago, following action taken by the Railway Commissioners, who regarded the chimney as a danger by possible collapse on railway property. The demolished portion of the chimney had never been replaced by the company, and, as the kiln had not been in operation since dismantling, had caused no concern to residents. Recently, however, the kiln had been put into operation again, with the result that, smoke, soot, cinders, etc., being inadequately consumed in the stack, were carried over adjoining premises, causing a nuisance.
The inspector recommended that the company be directed to abate the nuisance within forty days from date of notice by the reconstruction of the chimney stack to an additional height of not less than fifty feet. In addition they should be asked to take greater care during firing operations.
Council decided to adopt the inspector's recommendation and request the company to reconstruct the chimney stack immediately. |
